New Delhi, March 14: After a humiliating defeat in the Punjab Assembly elections, G23 Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ajay Maken said the party high command’s decision to replace Captain Amarinder Singh by Charanjit Singh Channi as Chief Minister of the State was justified, but pointed out that the decision had been “delayed”.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said the decision to remove former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh was right. Meanwhile, Ajay Maken, chairman of the Punjab selection committee, slammed Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu during the meeting on the poll debacle. At the 4-hour meeting of the Congress Working Committee, detailed consultations were held on the election defeat in Punjab.

Azad said, “Not only were Punjab MPs troubled by the captain, but the party was also unhappy with his growing ‘Nawabi’ attitude,” adding that he was aware of the situation as he was sitting in Delhi.

Acting Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi took the blame for a delay in making a decision to replace Singh.

Giving a report on the landslide defeat in the Punjab elections, Maken targeted Sidhu and said: “When the party was trying to work out the electricity bill relief decision under the Channi government, Sidhu’s statements created a atmosphere against the government.”

He also mentioned in his report the statements made by Sidhu’s wife, after the party’s decision to make Channi the chief minister of the state. Ajay Maken told CWC members how Sidhu’s wife had raised issues in protest against the party’s slogan of a ‘poor CM’.

He even said that Sidhu’s daughter’s statement also caused the party a huge loss just before the election.

Based on the discussions held at the CWC, it is certain that the party could take tough action against the Punjab Congress speaker.
