NEW DELHI: The chorus to make Rahul Gandhi president of Congress intensified further on Sunday as several leaders and workers voiced support for him to take on the role of party leader.

Ahead of a crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said no one is opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi like Gandhi does and is fighting resolutely.

“The Prime Minister must start his speech after targeting Rahul Gandhi, you can understand what that means. We all want Rahul ji to assume the leadership of the party,” Gehlot told reporters.

He also hailed Priyanka Gandhi for resolutely fighting in Uttar Pradesh, saying the “Ladki hoon lad sakti hu campaign” had resonated across the country.

Gehlot alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the recent ballot by engaging in polarization. However, he accepted that the Congress lost in Punjab due to infighting.

The Rajasthan chief minister has also accused Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati of colluding with the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar also supported the idea of making Gandhi the leader of the party.

“As I also said earlier, Sh. Rahul Gandhi should immediately assume the full-time Congress Presidency. This is the wish of millions of Congress workers like me,” he tweeted.

Congress workers from around Delhi, who converged near the party office, were not allowed to enter the AICC headquarters as traffic was blocked and the road in front of the party office was barricaded by the police.

A group led by Delhi Congress leaders including Alka Lamba voiced support for Gandhi to lead the party and launched slogans in support of him and Congress General Secretary Priyaka Gandhi Vadra.

Youth Congress leader Srinivas BV said the Gandhi family is the thread that unites not only the Congress but all sections of the country and it is not dependent on any electoral victory or defeat.

Rahul Gandhi had resigned as Congress speaker after the party suffered its second consecutive defeat in the 2019 general election.

Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party as interim president, also offered to step down in August 2020 after heavy criticism from a section of leaders, dubbed G-23, but the CWC urged her to continue. .
